Technology has seen an exponential rise over the last few decades.
Both hardware and software has got more sophisticated, and faster, which means that cybersecurity has also become a sophisticated threat.
So, what are the myths, and what’s the truth when it comes to keeping your digital-life safe?
We spoke to Elena Sanchez Carvajal, one of our Cybersecurity Portfolio Managers, who gave us her thoughts on cyber-security myths.
What’s something that has surprised you about cyber-security, since becoming a portfolio manager?
I’ve come to realize that everyone is a target when it comes to cybersecurity, much like the constant scams we encounter daily on our phones. Cybercriminals don’t just go after big companies—any business, regardless of size, that generates just a bit of money can be a target. What’s more surprising, however, is how easily they can infiltrate IoT devices, turning everyday items into potential entry points for an attack. From washing machines to smartwatches, any connected device can serve as a gateway. We’re pretty much witnessing traditional forms of crime being extrapolated into the cyber world, where threats can come from multiple directions, and the anonymity of the digital landscape provides criminals with a layer of protection that authorities often struggle to penetrate. In today’s environment, it’s crucial to stay vigilant and aware of these diverse and unexpected threats.
So, in a world where threats can be directed towards individuals, and not just large companies, how do we protect ourselves?
I used to believe that a strong antivirus was enough to protect me and my family, but I now know that cybersecurity goes far beyond that. It involves a comprehensive set of solutions designed to safeguard all layers of the ICT environment. Today, I would never advise a customer to rely on a single tool for protection—security requires a multi-layered approach.
With threats coming from any direction, it’s more important than ever to understand the climate of security, and what we should be doing as a business community.
In the Cybersecurity breaches survey 2023, a report published by the UK government, we can see that three in ten businesses have undertaken cybersecurity risk assessments (29%, vs. 27% of charities) in the last year – rising to 51% of medium businesses and 63% of large businesses. Organisation are taking their cyber-health seriously, but there is still more to do.
